Data transformation: an underestimated tool by inappropriate use Agronomy
Ribeiro-Oliveira, João Paulo; Santana, Denise Garcia de; Pereira, Vanderley José; Santos, Carlos Machado dos.
There are researchers who do not recommend data transformation arguing it causes problems in inferences and mischaracterises data sets, which can hinder interpretation. There are other researchers who consider data transformation necessary to meet the assumptions of parametric models. Perhaps the largest group of researchers who make use of data transformation are concerned with experimental accuracy, which provokes the misuse of this tool. Considering this, our paper offer a study about the most frequent situations related to data transformation and how this tool can impact ANOVA assumptions and experimental accuracy. Our database was obtained from measurements of seed physiology and seed technology. The coefficient of variation cannot be used as an...

Development and Evaluation of a Fish Feed Mixer CIGR Journal
ADEBUKOLA, ADENIGBA ADEMOLA.
Abstract A Fish feed mixing machine was designed, developed and the effect of speed and retention time on the performance of the mixer was evaluated. The mixing system was tested using three fish feed ingredients; bone meal, groundnut cake and maize grain which was purchased from the market in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. The moisture content of the bought ingredients was determined to be 13.1%, 14.7% and 17.5% moisture content dry basis respectively. The mixer was tested using a feed component of three equal measures of 10 kg of ground corn (maize), milled groundnut cake and bone meal which were initially retained on 2 mm, 850 µm and 150 µm sieve respectively. The experiment was replicated thrice at four retention time (5 min, 10 min, 15 min and 20 min)...

Estimation of optimum plot sizes in field experiments with annatto Bragantia
Viana,Anselmo Eloy Silveira; São José,Abel Rebouças; Matsumoto,Sylvana Naomi; Sales-Júnior,Sálvio Gusmão.
The objective of this study was to estimate the optimum plots size for experiments with annatto. The uniformity assay consisted of 12 rows with 12 plants in each row. The variety Bico de Pato was used, planted in 5 x 4 m spacing and evaluated at 5 years of age. Three methods were used: maximum curvature, modified maximum curvature and the comparison of variances. The plot size estimate varied according to the methodology used and the characteristic analyzed. The adequate plot size was found to be 107.2 m² (5 plants) using the modified maximum curvature method, which resulted in more precise estimates , taking into consideration that the ideal plot should facilitate the efficient evaluation of all characteristics analyzed in this experiment.

Genetic study of litter size and litter uniformity in Landrace pigs R. Bras. Zootec.
Camargo,Ederson Gomes; Marques,Daniele Botelho Diniz; Figueiredo,Elsio Antonio Pereira de; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Lopes,Paulo Sávio.
ABSTRACT We aimed to estimate litter size and litter uniformity genetic parameters and genetic trends of Landrace pigs at birth and at three weeks by using multitrait analyses for 2,787 litters. The following litter traits were evaluated: number of piglets born alive (NBA), within-litter weight mean at birth (MBW), within-litter weight standard deviation at birth (SDB), within-litter weight coefficient of variation at birth (CVB), number of piglets at three weeks (NT), within-litter weight mean at three weeks (MT), within-litter weight standard deviation at three weeks (SDT), and within-litter weight coefficient of variation at three weeks (CVT). Heritability estimates for NBA, MBW, SDB, and CVB were 0.09±0.04, 0.31±0.08, 0.01±0.04, and 0.07±0.05,...

Implications of the variability in soil penetration resistance for statistical analysis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Gubiani,Paulo Ivonir; Reichert,José Miguel; Reinert,Dalvan José; Gelain,Neiva Somavilla.
Soil penetration resistance (PR) is a measure of soil compaction closely related to soil structure and plant growth. However, the variability in PR hampers the statistical analyses. This study aimed to evaluate the variability of soil PR on the efficiency of parametric and nonparametric analyses in indentifying significant effects of soil compaction and to classify the coefficient of variation of PR into low, medium, high and very high. On six dates, the PR of a typical dystrophic Red Ultisol under continuous no-tillage for 16 years was measured. Three tillage and/or traffic conditions were established with the application of: (i) no chiseling or additional traffic, (ii) additional compaction, and (iii) chiseling. On each date, the nineteen PR data...

Optimum sample size in quantitative characteristics of seeds of polyembrynic mango Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Arellano-Durán,Nely; Villegas-Monter,Ángel; Muñoz-Orozco,Abel.
Abstract Determining the sample size in a scientific investigation is important because it gives reliability in the results together with the efficiency in the use of resources and optimization of time. Polyembryony is a characteristic that allows to obtaining clonal and zygotic plants in the same seed. In mango this characteristic is presented, however, there is no information that mentions which is the adequate sample size to evaluate it. The objective of the present work was to determine the optimum sample size by means of the maximum curvature method for future polyembryony studies. Mangoes from the cultivar Manila and Ataulfo were collected from the states of Guerrero and Nayarit, Mexico. In each state, two orchards of each cultivar were chosen, and...

Production components of corn as function of seed distribution along the planting row AGRIAMBI
Silva,Flavio H. da; Cunha,Paulo C. R. da; Almeida,André C. de S.; Araújo,Lucas da S.; Jakelaitis,Adriano; Silveira,Pedro M. da.
ABSTRACT High corn yields in high-tech systems are related to proper crop implementation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of variability in the distribution of seeds along the planting row on corn production components. The study was conducted under Cerrado conditions in the municipality of Urutaí, GO, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The effects of five coefficients of variation (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80%) of non-uniformity in the spatial distribution of seeds along the planting row of two corn hybrids (P30F53HX and P3646HX) were evaluated. No interactions were observed for the analysed corn variables. However, as the non-uniformity in seed distribution along the planting row...

Soil water content temporal-spatial variability of the surface layer of a Loess Plateau hillside in China Scientia Agricola
Hu,Wei; Shao,Ming An; Wang,Quan Jiu; Reichardt,Klaus.
Surface soil moisture exhibits an important variability in terms of spatial and temporal domains, which may result in critical uncertainties for agricultural water management. The purposes of this study were (i) to characterize the temporal dynamics and stability of the spatial variability of the surface 0-6 cm soil water content θon a hill-slope; (ii) to investigate issues related to soil moisture conditions including dominating factors on soil moisture and to the estimation of the mean θ. During a period of more than one month θwas measured on thirteen days by Frequency Domain Reflectometry using a 10 x 10 m grid of measurement points covering a 60 x 280 m domain within a hill-slope of the Loess Plateau in China. Soil water content exhibited a moderate...
